A 14-year-old girl named Tejaswani Priyadarshani from the Odisha state of India has invented a bicycle that runs on air. It can run up to 60km on 10kg compressed air. The girl is a class xi student of Saraswati Shishu Vidyamandir of Rourkela, Odisha. The idea of air bike came into her mind when she visited a bicycle- repair shop. She saw the mechanic using; air gun’ to detangle knots in bicycle tires.
She thought that if air gun can be used in this way it can also be used to run a bicycle.
She discussed the idea with her father who inspired her and helped her to carry out her idea.
The father and the daughter together tried many experiments. They bought an air tank and also an inlet for the purpose of filling the air. It has also a measuring dial, on/off the knob and a valve to release excess air.
When the knob is switched on the air from the cylinder is moved to the air gun placed near the paddle of the bicycle which rotates the gear of the bicycle with the help of six blades fixed in the bicycle. It creates the motion in the bicycle.
According to Priyadarshini, the similar concept can be applied to a motorcycle to save fuel and it would be helpful in creating a pollution free environment.
